Driving in the Safe Lane
Driving in the Safe Lane Pledge
___I pledge to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.
I will encourage my parents to give me as much practice time as possible. I will make a schedule and hold them to it whenever possible. I will continue to practice with them, even after I get my license. I will practice under different road and weather conditions, starting with side roads and then progressing to major roads and highways. I will avoid driving in bad weather without supervision.
__ I pledge ALWAYS TO WEAR MY SEATBELT.
I will always require my passengers to wear their seatbelts, whether they’re in the front or back seat. I will wear a seatbelt when I am a passenger.
___ I pledge to LIMIT THE NUMBER OF PASSENGERS IN MY CAR.
Passengers are distracting and oftentimes encourage risk-taking behavior. My risk of a fatal crash increases enormously with each additional passenger.
___ I pledge NEVER TO DRINK AND DRIVE.
Driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs is illegal and will impair my ability to drive. I will not be a passenger in anyone’s vehicle who is under the influence.
___ I pledge ALWAYS TO OBEY THE SPEED LIMIT.
Speed is one cause of fatal crashes. I will always obey posted speed limits and all other posted signs, signals and markings.
___ I pledge to RESTRICT LATE-NIGHT DRIVING.
Visibility is reduced at night, making accurate judgments more difficult. I am three times more likely to be killed at night than during the day.
___ I pledge NOT TO USE A CELL PHONE.
Even “hands free” talking, text messaging, or using other electronic devices are distractions that divert my attention from the road. I will save the cell phone for emergency use. I will pull off the road to a safe location if I need to make a call.
___ I pledge to AVOID OTHER DISTRACTIONS.
I will not eat, drink, adjust the radio or climate controls, or engage in other distractions while driving.
___ I pledge to DRIVE A SAFE CAR.
I will have my car inspected regularly and will have it serviced when problems appear. When buying a car, I will ask about the types of airbags and other safety features included.
___ I pledge to HAVE THE RIGHT ATTITUDE.
Driving is a privilege, not a right. With that privilege comes great responsibility. I will take that responsibility seriously. My car is the most powerful weapon I will probably ever handle. 1 1⁄2 tons of fast-moving metal is not child’s play.
