The Driving in the Safe Lane program is a model of a true school-community partnership involving the Parent Center; the schools; law enforcement; government and the medical and business communities.

Goals

The goals of our program are:

• To educate parents and teens about safety measures, New York State driving laws and parental liabilities.

• To raise awareness and develop responsible driving attitudes, thereby helping to reduce the number of driving related teen injuries and fatalities in our community.

• To enhance motivation for safe driving

• To encourage communication between parents and their teens

 

Overview

Facts, safety measures and recommendations
addressed by medical doctor:

• Statement of facts and statistics in relation to teen drivers

• Discussion of how to make teen a safe driver

• Explanation of neurological basis for “typical teen behaviors”

• Identify problems—inexperience/poor judgment, distractions, passengers, night driving, risky behaviors

• Suggest actions to correct problems

• Offer resource information available in print /online

NYS Driving Laws and Drinking/Driving
addressed by police officer:

• Detailed explanation of Learner’s Permit and Junior License as per DMV

• Explanation of Graduated Licensing Law for NYS including regional restrictions (pertaining to Nassau County) for Limited Use Junior License and Full Use Junior License

• Procedure to follow to switch from junior license to senior license

• Zero Tolerance LawDWI/DWAIDMV Points systemLicense suspension/revocation

• What to do when stopped by police officer

Insurance options and parental liabilities
addressed by insurance agent:

• The basics regarding liability—NYS minimums, suggested minimums, protecting assets, what is really needed

• How to insure new teen driver—Parents’ policy versus assigned risk

• When to notify insurance company of new teen driver

• Money saving tips—Deductibles, accident prevention courses, short rate, split rate options

• Insurance company points system

• What to do if involved in an accident
